Youth and the Future

The future is here.

The motives and character of our generation are often questioned, but little do some adults understand why. In a 2002 election analysis, when asked why they distrust government, 72% of young people said they believe politicians would rather listen to the wealthy and political elite than to their ideas. This is a decisive reason why youth need members of their own generation to be accessible, full members of government at the different levels today. I pledge to stand up for the young people, that they may never be intimidated again. I will serve as a vital link between the community and the capital, always available to ignite not just interest but confidence in the democracy we share - for all, but especially for those we will are already entrusting with our future.

Our parents and grandparents have rooted us, and now it is time to grow. We already give our lives for all Americans in new wars, boost the economy with our jobs, and broaden our knowledge for the sake of the ones who first taught us. Sometimes it seems like the problems are too much for us to handle, but we can today if we take the initiative. Social Security, Medicare and other benefits of our forebearers will soon be in our hands. Our very nation and our liberty will continue to be fought for by youth. The essence of America's founding was a risk, a new beginning.

For all the young people who believe they cannot make a difference, look at these examples and do not be mistaken. You are intelligent, and should never be silenced by the political jargon you hear. If there is a difference to be made, you must stand up and make it. Take the initiative to try. Democracy, you know, is a Great Experiment. And we need to ensure the survival of this Experiment by voting, getting involved in what interests us, and being heard. Democracy is a living, breathing experience founded by the people. That includes us! Do not fear in the name of liberty. You have a voice: use it! Democracy, indeed America, will only persist if we continue to ask ourselves: "what's next?"

I'd also like to encourage all youth to visit the page for a 21st century education, and regardless of their views, make sure they register to vote in this November's election!
